Keychron V3
The Keychron V3 is a compact mechanical keyboard designed for minimalists and those who prefer a sleek, clutter-free desk setup. One of the standout features of the V3 is its lack of a numpad, which allows for a more ergonomic positioning of your mouse closer to the keyboard.
Features
- Hot-swappable switches
- Compact 75% layout
- RGB backlighting
- Aluminum frame
- Compatible with macOS and Windows
Benefits
The compact layout of the V3 is ideal for those who need extra desk space or want their mouse to be closer to the keyboard. This setup reduces the strain on your shoulder and wrist, making it more comfortable for long typing or gaming sessions. The hot-swappable switches allow you to customize the typing experience without soldering.
Keychron V6
The Keychron V6 is a full-sized mechanical keyboard that includes a numpad. This model is perfect for users who frequently work with numbers or prefer a more traditional keyboard layout. Despite its larger size, the V6 maintains the build quality and customizable features that Keychron is known for.
Features
- Hot-swappable switches
- Full-sized layout with numpad
- RGB backlighting
- Aluminum frame
- Compatible with macOS and Windows
Benefits
The full-sized layout of the V6 includes a numpad, which is a significant advantage for users who need to input numbers frequently. However, one of the personal insights I found was the convenience of having the Enter key on the numpad easily accessible with my mouse hand. Initially, I preferred the V3 for its compactness, but I ultimately switched to the V6 because I found myself using the numpad Enter key more often than I anticipated. I also often use the *-key on the numpad.
Personal Experience
After using both keyboards, I found that the Keychron V3 was excellent for reducing desk clutter and keeping my mouse close for ergonomic comfort. However, as someone who often inputs numbers, I realized the convenience of the numpad on the V6 was something I couldn’t do without. The ease of reaching the Enter key with my mouse hand on the V6 made my workflow more efficient, prompting me to switch from the V3 to the V6.
Modding the V6
One of the most captivating aspects of using a Keychron keyboard, whether it’s the V3 or V6, is the satisfying “thock” sound that accompanies each keystroke. This sound is a hallmark of high-quality mechanical keyboards and adds a tactile dimension to typing that many enthusiasts cherish. Personally, I prefer brown switches for their balanced tactile feedback, but red switches are also a popular choice among users for their smooth and linear feel. For those looking for something a bit more exclusive, yellow switches offer a unique typing experience.
In pursuit of the perfect “thock” sound, I decided to modify my V6 keyboard. Using my Wowstick, I carefully unscrewed the keyboard and applied high-quality painter’s tape to the underside of the PCB. This simple mod significantly enhanced the thock sound, making each keystroke even more delightful. It’s incredible how a small adjustment can elevate the typing experience to new heights. The Keychron V6 is truly a fantastic keyboard, and with this modification, it has become an even more enjoyable tool for both work and play.
Conclusion
Both the Keychron V3 and V6 offer exceptional build quality and customization options. If you prioritize a minimalist setup and ergonomics, the V3 is a great choice. On the other hand, if you need a numpad and appreciate the convenience of additional keys, the V6 might be better suited for your needs. Either way, you can’t go wrong with a Keychron keyboard.
